Top-level domain .Budapest to remove – Domain Name Wire

MMX never launched the geographic domain.

MMX asks ICANN to end .budapest.

MMX (Minds + Machines) (AIM: MMX) has filed a notice with ICANN to terminate its contract to operate the .budapest top level domain name.

The company applied for the domain with the support of the Budapest city government, but never launched the domain.

MMX sold all of its operating assets to GoDaddy earlier this year.

In its original request, MMX wrote:

The .BUDAPEST top-level domain will serve residents and businesses in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. It will also serve to inform tourists, visitors, investors and other non-local Internet users about Budapest. The .BUDAPEST gTLD will also be used by the Budapest City Government for eGovernment services. The .BUDAPEST will serve as an easily recognizable and easily accessible Internet identifier for the city of Budapest …

Top-level geo domains have not been as successful as many hoped. MMX lost eight digits in a deal to mine .london.

The .Budapest is the second geographic area to head for the trash. In 2018, Qatar asked ICANN to end .doha.

.Budapest and .doha are the only unbranded top-level domains that are voluntarily terminated by their owners.
