The Metaverse – Top stories 2021 – Domain Name Wire

A sharp increase in demand for domains with meta in them.

“All the right areas are taken.”

It’s a common thing you hear about domain names. I have long maintained that this is not true. Many terms were coined or popularized after the registration of top .com domains in the 1990s. Blog, for example.

Or the sudden rise in popularity of the word metaverse. Although metaverse.com was registered in 1994, many related domains were purchased this year alone and sold for a lot of money.

The idea of the metaverse is not new. But it has become more popular this year, culminating with Facebook’s announcement that it is rebranding itself as Meta Platforms as it prepares to become a leader in metaverse technology.

Domain investors took hold of meta-related domains long before this rebranding and even before there was any hint that Facebook would be changing its name. This will make it difficult for Meta platforms to protect the word meta as a brand. This is a good thing because some companies are already using the word for their brand or their products and services. Meta Platforms does not own the metaverse.

The graph below from Estibot shows how the term took off this year. The graphic is for the meta, not the metaverse, and some words unrelated to the metaverse have been encountered there (eg, metal). But this remains illustrative. From 2016 to 2017, around 100 domain records per day contained meta. It rose to around 100-150 per day in 2018. It was 150-300 this summer and rose to over 10,000 after Facebook’s announcement.

The increase in demand for meta-verse-related domains has been astounding. Some domains sold at five figures within weeks of purchase. And it has expanded beyond .com.

According to NameBio, these are the 10 best public sales of this year that contain meta.

metaverse.io $ 175,000
meta.so $ 149,000
meta.io $ 100,000
metaversegroup.com $ 75,000
metarx.com $ 60,000
metapayments.co $ 52,450
metaavatars.net $ 44,000
metatime.com $ 40,000
metadating.net $ 35,000
metanfts.io $ 30,000

Note that both metaverse.io and meta.io were sold in March, well before news of a new Facebook image leaked.

The final area contains NFTs, another hot word in 2021. More on that in another article.
