The Te Aroha Estate home is officially ready for beauty business after Te Aroha Mineral Spas celebrated the move of its beauty and massage arm with a house open last weekend.

At the Open House, locals were invited to wander through the rooms of the recently restored 1908 Edwardian monument. Aimee Davies, director of tourism for Matamata-Piako District Council, said the day was incredibly attended.

“People [were] can’t wait to see what we have done with the place. The comments and compliments we received blew our staff away, many commented on how beautiful the rooms are and how peaceful, welcoming and warm the place is. “

Beauty and massage services operate from a single room in the mineral spas building on the site of the original # 1 bathhouse, but over the years the demand has increased dramatically and services were often booked. two weeks in advance.

“Every month we turn away paying customers, locals and tourists, so this decision [goes] a great way to meet some of that demand, ”says Davies.

With the move to the Maison du Domaine, the massage and beauty team is now able to offer a wider range of services, including couple massages, cocooning evenings, group bookings of four or five people in same time or mothers and daughters who wish to be treated together.

After a massage or facial, guests can enjoy a cup of herbal tea in a specially furnished relaxation area or on the veranda overlooking the Te Aroha Estate.

Davies said: “This is truly a special building in the most magnificent location – we are delighted that our qualified estheticians are able to treat our clients in this new space. “

Over the past four months, the estate’s home has received much-needed repairs and maintenance to prepare it for commercial use, including repiling, air conditioning installation, and veranda replacement. It now houses a mix of one- and two-bed treatment rooms and a dedicated manicure and pedicure area.

“We are so proud of the modern and tranquil space we have created and enjoyed working with the original features inside and out – Domain House is back in business and it looks beautiful,” Davies declares.

The Domain House is a former tea house from the early 1900s that was previously used as a rental location, but has garnered little to no interest in the past 15 years.

At the same time, the works of the new spa of Te Aroha, approved in the Long Term Plan 2021-2031, are also progressing. In mid-November, a team of experts took soil samples from the Domaine to study the stability of the soil. This will help decide where a new day spa for Te Aroha could be located.

The five-person project governance group, including Mayor Ash Tanner, is currently examining critical risks, as if there is enough geothermal water to support a larger day spa operation.

Once the risks have been analyzed and the group is convinced that they can be managed, the goal for 2022 will be to develop concepts for the facilities.

In July, the governance group took a study trip to other New Zealand spas for inspiration. Mayor Ash Tanner said that in terms of design, the group would consider a mix of mineral water and normal heated pools, as well as pools that allow multiple people to relax.

“We would also like [incorporate] these pools in a bush setting because we have the mountain at Te Aroha. “

The board has committed $ 18.9 million to the project over the next 10 years, but will only move forward if the business case accumulates.
